Each compartment is locked until you push the end tab, releasing the locking mechanism.  Lift the compartment lid you need and release the tab - all other compartments are locked once more.  Safe from spillage and annoying migration from compartment to compartment. 

OMG I wish I had had these years ago!  I dropped mine from a wonky shelf a couple of months ago and all the seed beads within stayed in place.  Don't know about you but that's priceless - so don't be put off by the price.  Yes, you can get a lot cheaper and if you have all the time in the world then don't bother with the Craft Mates Locking Caddy.  (and can I have your phone number on the off chance that I do spill something I'd rather not bother picking up?) :-)
